Bjork first became popular as one of the lead vocalists of the avant-pop Icelandic sextet the Sugarcubes. Their debut album, Life's Too Good, became a UK and US hit in 1988. For the next four years, the group maintained a successful cult following in both countries. Eventually, the Sugarcubes split apart and Bjork moved to London to pursue a dance-oriented solo career. Upon her arrival in London, Bjork immersed herself in dance and club culture, working with many of the biggest names in the genre, setting the stage for her full-length Debut. The album went gold in the US and platinum in the UK, earning Bjork rave reviews.
